Please read the following information carefully.
Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny sterile probes in order to induce the production of collagen.
So how does SkinPen work?
We use tiny sterile probes to pierce the skin on purpose, in a controlled, sterile environment. The probes enter the skin vertically without tearing or scratching the tissue. This causes inflammation and triggers ‘a wound healing response’.
What happens to the skin?
Phase 1
The first stage starts immediately after the procedure, which is an inflammatory response to prevent further infection and blood loss. Without this response, no healing can take place.
Phase 2
The functions of the next phase prevent infection, and clean the wound to provide the best conditions for healing:
- The damaged cells and bacteria are removed from the area.
- The blood vessels dilate (the skin goes red) to allow the white blood cells to flood to the area.
- The white blood cells and nutrients from the blood, enter the wound and accumulate there. They cleanse the wound by releasing chemicals that digest any bacteria or tissue debris present. Once this is complete, the white cells die off and can be seen as moist, sticky tissue.
Phase 3
Phase 3 is known as the Proliferative Phase. During this, the fibroblast cells (responsible for making collagen), gather at the wound and produce new collagen. The new collagen is not laid down in nice straight lines, instead it is constructed in a random, disorganised fashion. This happens because the body is trying to repair the area quickly. The skin then contracts to heal the wound.
Phase 4
In the final phase, white blood cells 're-jig' the disorganised collagen and compact it down into nice, straight, structured lines, giving the skin strength, volume and a more youthful appearance. The wound healing response is complete.
Collagen Induction Therapy
Collagen Induction Therapy (Microneedling) is not just a quick fix. To enable the best results it’s important to commit to a programme, allowing the skin the chance to remodel and progress through the different phases. This in turn will stimulate the production of new collagen and the remodelling of old collagen.
Benefits
- Improves wrinkles, minimises pore size and induce skin tightening
- Stimulates collagen production, promoting regeneration and better complexion
- Improves surgical, traumatic, burn and acne scars
- Treats hyperpigmentation (brown spots and Melasma)
- Minimally invasive procedure with little to no recovery time
- Noticeable results in less than a day
- Safe for all skin types, light to dark
- Effective on all body parts, including face, neck and décolletage
- Post-procedure protocol for optimal results
Is SkinPen painful?
Because a topical anaesthetic cream is used before the treatment, discomfort, if any is minimal. It feels very similar to a Microdermabrasion treatment. Due to the nature of the treatment the skin is usually red afterwards, however this goes down usually after a few hours.
When will I see results?
Best visible results are seen with a series of at least 3 to 6 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with a maintenance treatment to boost the skin every 3 months. There is a continuous and progressive improvement overtime in overall skin smoothness, firmness and elasticity. Final results (including remodelling of the skin and complete rejuvenation) are noticeable in 3 to 12 months. Results are dependent on the individual.

Your practitioner may provide aftercare guidance based specifically on your medical history or skin type, so make sure to follow them carefully.
Aftercare tips
- As a general rule, you should reach for sunscreen constantly for the first 2 weeks after microneedling (minimum 30 SPF). Make sure to apply sunscreen anytime you go outside in the days following your treatment.
- Don’t spend prolonged time out in the sun for the first week after your microneedling procedure, as you’ll be more prone to sun damage than usual.
- Use products that your practitioner recommends to avoid infection.
- Avoid touching your face and ensure you wash your hands before you do so.
- Don’t put on makeup in the 24 hours following microneedling. When you do apply makeup, ensure you wash all makeup brushes thoroughly beforehand.
- Avoid swimming pools, saunas, and situations where you might sweat heavily, including intense workouts at the gym, to protect your newly treated skin. After 72 hours have passed, you may be able to resume these activities.
What to use and avoid
- For the first few days after your microneedling procedure, you’ll need to avoid any skin care product that contains harsh chemicals meant to exfoliate. Avoid anything that’s scented, and don’t use glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids.
- Retinol A and vitamin C serum should be avoided for the first 48 hours, minimum, after microneedling. Once 2 full days have passed, you might want to gradually add products back into your daily beauty routine instead of doing your usual regimen, especially if you use products that have strong anti-aging formulas.
- Be sure to run any cleansers, toners, or scrubs that you plan to apply in the 2 to 3 days after microneedling by your practitioner to make sure the ingredients won’t worsen side effects.
- Hyaluronic acid can be used following microneedling, and it’s even recommended in some cases to help stimulate collagen production after your procedure.
- If your skin is feeling dry, it’s generally safe to apply coconut oil as an emollient to lock in moisture and hydrate your face after microneedling. Diluted, alcohol-free witch hazel may also be used to cleanse dry skin. Stick to using gentle, natural ingredients that you’re familiar with.
